Give Children Choices To Inspire A Love Of Reading

When I talk to other parents and teachers about inspiring books for their children to read, or how to get a “reluctant reader” to pick up a book every day and read, I believe an important step in engaging all readers is giving them both the choice of what they want to read and the access to a variety of book choices. In normal times, going to the library or bookstore to browse would be ideal. There is something special about holding an unread book in your hands, seeing the cover, wondering what story awaits. Of course, for those who cannot get to a bookstore or just like to peruse in the comfort of home, looking up books on the online library website or e-commerce websites and reading about them are great options too.

Many libraries have e-books to check out and you can search by category like fantasy & fiction, by author or by title. Our local library now has curbside pickup to check out physical books. Woohoo! Whatever the option, the key here is to give choices so that the child feels ownership in their reading journey. Since I am reading about many books daily, I find what works with my own children in deciding what they want to read next is saying: “I read about these three books. Take a look and let me know if any of them sound like something you want to read next.” Most often, they pick one of the choices which is ultimately the goal. I hope that helps. Happy Reading!
